5 Skin Care Resolutions You Should Make this January

By: Alia Savage

January shouldn’t just be the time that you resolve to get your health and finances in order, it’s also the perfect time to commit to better skincare. Now, you may be thinking, “I moisturize, what more do you want from me?”

The answer? A ton! Whether you’re a glammed-out beauty, a gorgeous natural, or someone who lands in between, the foundation of every look is healthy skin. Given all of the harsh elements we face daily, we could all be going more to take care of ourselves.

Here are 5 skin care resolutions you should make this January.

Stop Sleeping with Makeup
It might seem like no big deal, but sleeping in your makeup is a big no-no. Healthy skin needs time to breathe, and sleeping in makeup inhibits its ability to. Plus, nighttime is when the body naturally repairs the damage done to our skin during the day. Leaving on makeup causes the body to have to work even harder. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra five minutes washing your face with a gentle cleanser each night.

Wear Sunscreen -- Every Day!
Sunscreen isn’t just for hot, summer days. Unfortunately, the UV rays that cause skin cancer are all around us, even when it’s cloudy outside. But you should also know that they’re also responsible for premature aging. Wearing sunscreen -- everyday -- helps prevent these two problems at once. So there’s really no reason to skip the daily application.

Get Enough Sleep
Between work, school, and the endless stream of Netflix shows just waiting for us to watch them, evading sleep is often tempting. But beauty sleep is a very real thing! Like mentioned above, our skin repairs itself at night, but only when we’re sleeping. And trust, the body knows the difference. So please, put down the devices and get some shut-eye this year.

Try Something New
We all have our go-to beauty regimens, but life is too short to never switch up your look. You should take the time to experiment, even if you ultimately decide that change isn’t for you. Not only will it allow you to explore new things, it can be fun, too! Especially if you involve your friends.

Seek Out More Animal-Friendly Products
Finally, now’s a good time to be more conscious about not only what you’re putting into your body, but also what you’re putting on it! We often don’t see the ugliness that animals endure by being test subjects for the beauty industry, but that doesn’t make it any less devastating for the animals. That’s why we should all be trying to incorporate more brands that don’t test on animals or use animal byproducts in their ingredients. Thankfully, there are a TON of brands who have jumped on board and gone the vegan route (as well as a few traditional brands that are transitioning).
